Vrsac
is one of the rare towns in Serbia with developed air traffic. It
is well known for its 70 year long tradition of training professional
pilots
at JAT Flight Academy. This academy has trained more than 90% of
the pilots who fly for the national company JAT and almost 30 companies
from all over the world has trained their pilots at this very academy.
Apart from regular pilot training, the academy supplies with services
of maintaining of the whole fleet of airplanes (different types
Cessna, Piper), as well as training for maintenance of airplanes.
At the moment the flight academy possesses a Certification for maintenance
and reparation of airplanes (Aircraft Maintenance Certificate) given
by the local professional authorities and also it has a certification:
Authorized New Piper Service Center given by a well known American
producer of aircrafts of general aviation New Piper Aircraft Company.
Recently has begun the procedure of international verification in
concordance with Part 145 at E.A.S.A., of European Agency for safety
in air-traffic with the seat in Brussels.

Assuming that the aircraft maintenance service of the academy will
soon receive an international verification notice in concordance
with Part 145, the academy will become a regional center for maintenance.
The length of the runway is 1000 m, while its width is 25m. Aircrafts
of 24 m width and maximum weight of 5700 kg when taking off may
land and take off from this airport. Airport is presently used for
the purposes of air-taxi traffic, training pilots, auto mechanics
and air treatment of soil.
There are five hangars built at the airport that can accommodate
and maintain aircrafts of the academy and agricultural aviation.
There is also a building with classrooms and one with a control
tower.
For the purposes of undisturbed reception and transportation of
jet and turbo-jet airplanes of maximum weight of 30 tones, it would
be necessary to reconstruct Vrsac airport, which would include:
- Modern runway with night start and adequate facilities. It is
necessary to extend the runway for 500m and to widen it for another
5m.
- Construction of the reception building with customs and all facilities
or reconstruction of the air traffic control tower building for
arrivals and departures of the passengers and goods.
- It is necessary to equip the airport with adequate marking and
lightning systems
- It is necessary to equip the air traffic control tower with radar
navigation system
For the purposes of air traffic of larger aircrafts whose weight
during taking off exceeds 5 700 kg, the road construction must be
strengthened and the take off-land runway lengthened. The taxiway
and terminal platform must be widened and strengthened as well as
the terminal building needs to be constructed and equip the airport
so as to receive and transport aircrafts, passengers and things,
that is equip and enable
airport services for larger aircrafts, according to the existing
regulations.
In order to adapt Vrsac airport for taking off and landing of aircrafts
of maximum weight of 30 tones during taking off (with wings width
of 28 m) it is quite necessary to reconstruct the maneuvering space
and terminal platform, while in order to be able to perform night
flights when the visibility is lower it is necessary to build in
a system of light signs and power supply which would be in concordance
with the type of the airport. It is also necessary to equip the
airport with radio navigating systems according to the needs and
possibilities of flight control.
The existing taking off-landing runway which is 1000 m long needs
to be lengthened by 1500 m. Its
width needs to be increased by 30 m.
Considering unfavorable position of Vrsac airport in relation to
the city itself, the lengthening of the runway needs to be done
400 m northward and a 100 m southward. This way the problem of noise
and air pollution of the city is lessened and there are more possibilities
for using the runway.
What also needs to be done is the strengthening of the whole construction
of the runway, taxiway and terminal platform, according to the 30
tones of airplane weight.
The effects of the reconstruction of Vrsac airport:
- Multipurpose function of the airport: school, tourism and business-travel.
- Connection of the South Banat region with the airports in: Nis,
Belgrade, Podgorica, Tivat, North Africa, Middle East countries.
- Rise in air-taxi traffic services, number of charter flights and
regular flights in the region.
- Increase of incomes from reparation of foreign aircrafts.
- Transportation of post express (“DHL”, “TNT”, “UPS” )
- Organization of motor races as sports and tourists attraction,
but also very profitable manifestations.
- Provide air traffic services to successful companies from Vrsac,
such as “Hemofarm” group, “Swisslion-Takovo” Concern, “Vrsacki Vinogradi”,
“Banat” and others.
- Better utilization of the capacity of the sport center “Millenium”
by providing foreign representations and clubs with services, whether
in regular championships, tournaments or preparations. It is important
to point out that Vrsac will be one of the host towns during the
European Basketball Championship in 2005. Large number of foreign
tourists is expected to arrive and that is why Vrsac as an organizer
must be presented in the best possible way and air traffic of Vrsac
can undoubtedly give contribution to it.
- Opening of this town towards European centers and the world, will
help develop tourism in this region as well as the sector of supplying
with services in general.
