
Vrsac is considered to be one of the most significant centers
of agriculture in the region of southern Banat, which is the southern
part of the province of Vojvodina. It is mainly because it has
54.000 hectares of arable and extremely fertile land in its possession.
The city itself together with 22 surrounding communities has some
56.000 residents, whose lives are closely connected with agriculture.
Although 36.000 citizens are employed in a developed industry
the main link that connects them is agriculture. Thus, of the
overall arable land, 48.000 hectares are in the possession of
private sector, while only 6.000 hectares are owned by the state.

The remaining part of cultivable land, the size of which is 3
to 50 hectares, is owned by smaller landowners, nevertheless the
objective is to enlarge the properties and lessen the number of
households directly involved in agriculture.
Agriculture has of ancient times been one of the most important
preoccupations of the local residents and as such, influenced
to a large extent the development of other branches of economy.
Since the time of Romans, exploitation of extremely favorable
conditions for growing grapevine, mainly on the slopes of the
hill of Vrsac, has begun. Vineyards of Vrsac flourished and established
their reputation in Europe by the end of the 18th and beginning
of the 19th century, when there had been 10.000 hectares of grapevine
plantations. The wine from Vrsac became a synonym for the town
and the surrounding area, since it had been a favorite wine of
Hungarian king Ladislav II.
Nowadays, “Vrsacki vinogradi” continue to develop and improve
growth of vineyards as well as technology of producing wines and
spirits as part of a long and rich tradition of the region of
Vrsac. This company owns today 1.700 hectares of vineyards, while
500 hectares are a private property. Apart from having the most
up to date equipment for production and wine rearing, the wine
cellar “Vrsacki vinogradi” has the capacity to accommodate 4320
freight cars. The most frequently made sort of wine is Italian
Riesling (50%). It is followed by: Rhine Riesling, White Burgundy,
Chardone, Muscat Otonel, Traminac, Kreaca, Smederevka, Zupljanka,
Sasla.
Husbandry has simultaneously been developing along with other
branches of agriculture and
nowadays it is practiced on 51.000 hectares of arable land.

Husbandry with already mentioned capacities creates many possibilities
for development of preparation and food industry as well as growing
industrial plants. In relation to conditions and the size of arable
land, cattle breeding have not been exploited as much as it could
have been. Meadows and pastures spread on 9500 ha of land and
as such are ideal for rearing as well as development of sheep
and cattle production

Irrigation systems represent an inseparable part of intensive
agricultural production of high quality. The county of Vrsac owns
5740 hectares of land predominantly growing lucerne with an annual
yield of 2.500 freight cars. The largest market for this high
quality Lucerne flour is in Europe.
